5.3% increase in the back-to-school allowance
Every year, families with school-age children between the ages of six and eighteen eagerly await the adjustment of the income limits to qualify for the Back-to-School Allowance (ARS).
In 2024, these limits were increased by 5.3% compared to the previous year, reflecting the year-over-year change in consumer prices excluding tobacco. The ARS is intended for families with children aged six to eighteen, whether they are in school, in an apprenticeship, or enrolled in a specialized institution. It aims to help families cover expenses related to the start of the school year.
The new income limits for 2024:
- For 1 dependent child: €27,141
- For 2 dependent children: €33,404
- For 3 dependent children: €39,667
- For 4 dependent children: €45,930
- For each additional child: €6,263
The amount of the ARS varies depending on the child’s age and ranges from €398.09 to €434.61 for the 2023–2024 school year. These caps do not apply solely to the ARS. They are also used for other benefits, such as old-age insurance coverage for single-parent households, the family supplement in mainland France, and the shared child-rearing benefit in several regions.
