How do I amend my tax return?

Taxpayers can review and correct errors in their tax returns or in the calculation of the tax owed from August 2 through December 7.

Since 2019, the withholding tax has not significantly changed the tax calendar. Taxpayers are still required to file their tax returns in the spring, and tax bills are received during the following summer. This year, tax bills corresponding to the tax returns filed last spring will be posted online between July 26 and August 4. For those who opted to file using a paper form, the bills will be mailed between July 24 and August 30.

After receiving their tax assessment notice, taxpayers can check for errors in their filing or in the calculation of the tax owed. From August 2 through December 7, they can correct their return online. However, the DGFIP notes that this option to make corrections is available only to taxpayers who filed their return electronically.

Online corrections are made through the personal account on the impots.gouv.fr website. Once the changes have been made and confirmed, the tax authority will issue a new tax assessment notice. For paper tax returns, requests for corrections must be submitted via the secure messaging system or by mail, along with the necessary information.

Certain information cannot be corrected online, such as changes in marital status, updates to civil status, or changes of address, for which you must submit a request via secure messaging. However, dependents, deductible expenses, tax reductions and credits, as well as information related to the IFI can be modified online.
It is important to note that correcting your tax return after the filing deadline may result in penalties in addition to the additional tax owed. However, the “right to make a mistake” provision allows you to avoid the 10% surcharge in certain cases. Late-filing penalties are also reduced if the correction is made before or during a tax audit.
