Financial literacy: 35% of French people believe their level is very poor!
A survey was conducted among 3,658 people representative of the French population to assess their level of financial literacy. While 79% say they are very interested in the subject, the study also shows that there is still much work to be done…
Many studies show that France is far behind other countries in terms of financial literacy. But at least the French seem to be fully aware of this. In fact, more than 58% admit to having an average level of financial literacy, and more than 35% say theirs is very poor. Only 7% consider themselves fully knowledgeable and say they excel at managing their finances.
A Clear Interest
Yet money is by no means a topic that the vast majority of French people find off-putting or boring. Quite the contrary, as more than 79% of those surveyed say they are generally interested in financial topics. French people who are interested in financial topics cite four main reasons: the desire to build wealth to pass on to future generations (57%), the desire to prepare for retirement (55%), the need to grow their savings (52%), and the hope of one day becoming wealthy (51%).
On the other hand, for those who are not at all interested in financial matters, there are three main reasons that top the list: a lack of skills and knowledge (61%); the feeling of not being smart enough to understand how the financial system works (59%); and a lack of time (53% of French people).
A Need for Support
In order to navigate the vast and complex world of financial matters, many French people would like guidance and assistance in this process.
In fact, this is what more than 59% of those surveyed said.
