Yomoni recently published its new regional savings barometer for France, a comparative infographic that shows trends in savings across regions and the financial product choices made by the French in 2024.
A Ranking of Regions Whose Positions Will Change in 2024
In 2023, four regions stood out in terms of savings: Île-de-France, Pays-de-Loire, Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, and the PACA region. In 2024, these four regions still lead the way, but with a different ranking. Thus, Île-de-France remains in first place with only 10% of people having no savings products, followed by Pays-de-Loire with 13%. However, the PACA region drops from 17% of non-savers in 2023 to 13% in 2024, just ahead of Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, which falls from 15% last year to 14% in 2024.
The French People's Favorite Savings Products by Region
When it comes to savings products, a lot has changed in the past year as well. Savers in the PACA region have been more active this year, surpassing those in the Île-de-France region in several savings products, such as: real estate investments, accounting for 24% (compared to 22% in 2023); retirement savings plans, accounting for 17% (compared to 15% in 2023); PEA accounts at 11% (compared to 8% in 2023), and stock brokerage accounts at 9% (compared to 7% in 2023).
However, just like last year and across all regions of France, savings accounts rank first among savings products, with percentages ranging from 85% in Île-de-France to 72% in Hauts-de-France. Next come life insurance policies, followed by real estate investments, and finally PERs in fourth place, well ahead of PEAs or the stock market.
A Declining Monthly Savings Amount?
In 2023, 78% of residents of the Île-de-France region believed it was worthwhile to save at least €1,000 per month. In 2024, only 72% held that view. This downward trend in the amount of monthly savings to be set aside appears to apply to all regions of France.
The regions where the French save the most money are...
Savers in Brittany topped the rankings in 2023: 83% of them saved €500 or more per month. This year, they once again hold the top spot, but with only 80% of savers, tied with the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region.
Savings products with higher risks?
This year, the region where the French take the most risks with their savings remains Île-de-France, accounting for 41 percent—3 percentage points more than last year. Just as in 2023, the French take the fewest risks with their savings in Corsica and Occitanie/Pyrénées-Méditerranée.
Finally, the French people who are the most conservative when it comes to saving are found this year in the Pays-de-Loire region (40%) and the PACA region (41%).
