Funding Defense Through the Livret A Savings Account: Are you generally for or against it?

Funds from the Livret A savings account could be used to finance the defense industry, according to an amendment to the budget bill that the government is pushing through under Article 49.3.

In response to this announcement, MoneyVox wanted to find out what the French public thought by conducting a poll with YouGov*, and the results indicate that they are not really on board with this idea.

In fact, when French people are asked whether they support using money from the Livret A savings account to benefit companies in the defense industry, no fewer than 54% of them say no.

Even more interestingly, when French people are asked what projects they think the Livret A savings account should fund, public hospitals top the list at 61%, followed by schools at 43%.

“The Livret A savings account has an image of ‘social utility’ that, in the eyes of the French public, doesn’t really align with defense funding. This is evident in the low approval rating, and conversely in the higher levels of support for funding public hospitals (61%) or schools (43%), for example,” observes Maxime Chipoy, president of MoneyVox.

“In recent months, there has been a proliferation of proposals from politicians to divert Livret A funds from their primary purpose—financing public housing. This was already the case in February, when the government wanted to use these funds to finance nuclear power. Yet the need for housing alone is immense. Let’s stop playing games with the Livret A!” says Maxime Chipoy.
