Behind the Scenes of Impact Investment Funds
Within the broad spectrum of investment options, Socially Responsible Investment (SRI) funds stand out as influential players, focused on the dual goals of financial returns and societal impact.
Like traditional mutual funds (OPCs), these funds consist of a diversified portfolio of stocks (and sometimes bonds) from publicly traded companies, carefully selected by management companies regulated by the French Financial Markets Authority (AMF).
These financial vehicles—whether in the form of an Open-Ended Investment Company (SICAV) or a Mutual Fund (FCP)—serve as catalysts for informed and ethical investing.
Behind the scenes, the SRI fund manager acts as a conductor. His role is to orchestrate the selection of stocks (or bonds) based on ratings issued by non-financial rating agencies (such as Vigeo or EthiFinance) and/or according to an analytical framework developed in-house by his own management company.
Three distinct approaches can help guide the process of selecting securities:
- The "Best-in-Class" Approach: Under this approach, the portfolio manager identifies companies that have received the highest ratings for environmental, social, and governance (ESG) criteria in each industry sector—whether energy, automotive, finance, or retail. The top performers in each category are then included in the SRI portfolio.
- The "Best-in-Universe" Approach: Here, the portfolio manager compiles a list by identifying companies that have demonstrated the best ESG performance, regardless of sector. Regardless of their industry, these companies are in the spotlight of SRI.
- The "Best Efforts" Approach: This approach highlights companies that have distinguished themselves through substantial improvements in their ESG practices and performance. The portfolio manager focuses on those that have made the most significant efforts in the areas of environment, social responsibility, and governance.
At the heart of this balancing act between financial returns and societal impact, socially responsible investment funds provide an intriguing backdrop where investment decisions are shaped by social values and objectives. This dynamic, within the complex world of finance, aims to create lasting positive impacts.
