2025: Motorcycles in Compliance with the New Vehicle Inspection Requirements
Following a phased implementation in 2024, the mandatory vehicle inspection for Category L vehicles will continue to be rolled out in 2025.
This year, scooters, motorcycles, mopeds, and microcars registered between January 1, 2017, and December 31, 2019, must undergo this mandatory inspection. Owners have until December 31, 2025, to comply with this new requirement.
Penalties for Late Compliers
Drivers who fail to comply face a fine of 135 euros. In 2024, the authorities showed leniency by granting an extension to vehicles registered before 2017. This transition period now appears to be over, and enforcement is expected to intensify to ensure compliance with the regulations.
A phased rollout through 2027
The timeline calls for a gradual expansion of the requirement. In 2026, it will apply to vehicles registered between January 1, 2020, and December 31, 2021. Finally, by 2027, all L-category vehicles registered on or after January 1, 2022, must be in compliance.
Additionally, when selling a used vehicle that is more than five years old, a vehicle inspection performed within the last six months is now mandatory for these vehicles, unless the transaction is conducted through a professional, such as a repair shop or dealership.
A Road Safety Issue
This program aims to improve road user safety while promoting regular vehicle maintenance. With nearly 6 million Category L vehicles on the road in France, the technical inspection has become a key tool for preventing risks associated with breakdowns and malfunctions. This regulatory change, despite its constraints, should contribute to greater road safety.
