The List of the Most Stolen Cars in France
Vehicle thefts in France rose by 11.1% in 2023, with a total of 70,649 cases reported, according to the survey published by GIE Argos.
Cars account for two-thirds of all thefts, with a nearly 15% increase in thefts of this type of vehicle. The models most sought after by thieves are the best-selling ones, such as the Renault Clio IV, the Renault Mégane IV, and the Peugeot 3008 II. However, the Lexus RXII is the car most frequently stolen relative to the number of vehicles on the road.
The Bouches-du-Rhône, Île-de-France, Corsica, and Loire-Atlantique are the departments most affected by these thefts. Increasingly carried out by organized networks turning to international trafficking, 70% of the thefts are committed without breaking and entering, thanks to sophisticated methods such as the use of air cushions, jammers, or the “relay attack” technique. The stolen vehicles are then shipped abroad via seaports or dismantled to supply a market for spare parts.
In 2023, vehicle thefts cost insurers 580 million euros across 63,565 cases. Franck Le Vallois, CEO of France Assureurs, emphasizes how important it is for drivers to understand the issues surrounding vehicle theft, since the entire community of policyholders bears the cost of these thefts.
