Tax Return: What to Do If There's a Mistake?

Filing a tax return is an important milestone for French taxpayers. This year, residents of Zone 3—that is, departments numbered 55 through 976—had until Thursday, June 6, to file their returns. However, it is still possible to amend your return online until June 26, 2024, when the service closes.

If you notice an error or omission in your tax return, it is important to act quickly. The IRS website states that you can amend your tax return online as many times as you like, even after you’ve signed it. However, changes made after the filing deadline will be considered late and will result in a new tax assessment, which you’ll receive after the usual processing times.

If you need more time to amend your tax return, please note that an online amendment service will be available from July 31 through December 4, 2024. This option is available even if you used the automatic filing service. To access it, simply log in to your personal account and click on “Access Online Amendment.” Once you’ve updated the information, you must confirm the changes, and a new tax notice will be issued after the amended return has been processed.

However, if you filed a paper tax return, you will not be able to use the online correction service. In this case, you may file a claim by December 31 of the second year following the year of assessment indicated on the tax notice. This claim may be filed online, by mail, or in person at your local Individual Tax Office.

Please note that it is not possible to report a change in marital status (marriage, civil partnership, dissolution of a civil partnership, divorce, death), update civil status information, change the designation of a trusted third party, report a change of address, or add or modify the address of an affiliated student through the online correction service.

In summary, if you need to amend your tax return, you can do so online through June 26, 2024, or use the online amendment service from July 31 to December 4, 2024. Taxpayers who filed a paper return must file a claim by December 31 of the second year following the year of assessment indicated on the tax notice.
