The 2024 tax filing season begins in April

The deadlines for filing tax returns online vary by department: May 23 for departments numbered 1 through 19, May 30 for those in Zone 2 (2A through 54), and June 6 for departments numbered 55 through 95 and the overseas departments.

Although the campaign’s launch date has not yet been announced, the General Directorate of Public Finance recently revealed part of its schedule for the 2024 tax return on 2023 income. Taxpayers who have opted for a paper return have until May 20 to submit it, regardless of their department of residence. However, online filing is mandatory for most taxpayers, except for those whose homes do not have an internet connection.

Penalties apply to late filers. The tax authorities impose a 10% tax surcharge if you respond before receiving a formal notice, a 20% surcharge within 30 days of receiving the formal notice, and a 40% surcharge after that period. Late payment interest will also apply.

To estimate the amount of your tax, an online calculator is available on the impots.gouv.fr website.

In summary, the deadlines for filing online tax returns for the 2024 tax year are May 23, May 30, and June 6, depending on the department. Online filing is mandatory for most taxpayers, and penalties apply for late filing. An online calculator is available to estimate your tax liability.
